Choosing Kitchen Cabinet Hardware: What to Consider

Cabinet hardware may be a small consideration in comparison to everything else in the room, but it can do a lot in tying together the look for your kitchen, which is why you should take your time when choosing hardware. To make sure you make the most of getting new cabinet hardware, you should keep the following items in mind.

Decide Between a Knob and a Pull

While there is no strict rule about knobs and pulls, you can refer to function to decide whether you should get a knob or pull. For instance, you could use knobs on cabinet doors and pulls for drawers because they are easier and more comfortable to use. You can also use either knobs or pulls on all your kitchen cabinet doors and drawers.

Quick tip: If you decide to use pulls, make sure they are installed vertically on doors and horizontally on drawers.

Decide Between Square or Curved

Take a look at the edges of your kitchen countertops, your cabinet style, lighting fixtures and other key design elements. Do you see square or curved lines? Generally, square lines are found in contemporary kitchens while curved ones are present in traditional kitchens. Whatever line you’re seeing, however, make sure you choose cabinet hardware that is consistent with them.

Decide on a Finish

Brushed nickel and chrome are popular. There’s no harm in choosing these finishes if you really like them, but there are also others you can consider that will add interest to your kitchen. You also don’t need to match cabinet hardware with plumbing fixtures as long as what you choose matches other finishes in the room. Some of the other finishes you can consider include bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, black matte, antique pewter and rust.
